Karaniya Metta Sutta RealMedia file
Pali chanting by the Thai monks of Wat Buddharangsee, Sydney, Australia with English translation.

Bhikkhu Pesala

An Exposition of the Metta Sutta

The Metta Sutta is found in the Suttanipäta, vv 143-152. Often referred to as the Karanïya Metta Sutta, it was taught by the Buddha to a group of forest monks who were disturbed by tree spirits. He urged them to practise loving-kindness towards all beings. Then those spirits tolerated their presence happily

The Pali Text
Karan?yamatthakusalena,
yantam santam padam abhisamecca;
Sakko uj? ca suhuj?1 ca,
s?vaco cassa mudu anatim?n?.

Translation
He who is skilled in welfare, who wishes to attain that state of calm (nibb?na), should act thus: he should be able, upright, perfectly upright, obedient, gentle, and humble.

Santussako ca subharo ca,
appakicco ca sallahukavutti;
Santindriyo ca nipako ca,
appagabbho kulesvananugiddho.2

Translation
Contented, easily supported, with few duties, of light livelihood, with senses calmed, prudent, not impudent, not greedily attached to families.

Na ca khuddam?care3 kiñci,
yena viññ? pare upavadeyyum;
Sukhino va khemino hontu,
sabbasatt?4 bhavantu sukhitatt?.

Translation
He should not do the slightest thing for which other wise men might censure him. May all being be happy and secure, may they keep themselves happy!

Ye keci p?nabh?tatthi,
tas? v? th?var? vanavases?;5
D?gh? v? ye mahant?,6
majjhim? rassak? anukath?l?.

Translation
Whatever living beings there may be: feeble or strong, long or big, medium or short, tiny or huge, without exception;

Ditth? v? ye va aditth?,
ye ca d?re vasanti avid?re.
Bh?t? va sambhaves? va,7
sabbe satt? bhavantu sukhitatt?.

Translation
Seen or unseen, those dwelling far or near, those who are born or those who are to be born, may all beings be happy!

Na paro param nikubbetha,
n?timaññetha katthaci na8 kañci.
By?rosan? patighasaññ?,
n?ññamaññassa dukkhamiccheyya.

Translation
Let none deceive another, nor despise any person whatsoever in any place. Let him not wish any harm to another out of anger or ill-will.

M?t? yath? niyam puttam
?yus? ekaputtamanurakkhe;
Evampi sabbabh?tesu,
m?nasam bh?vaye aparim?nam.

Translation
Just as a mother would protect her only child at the risk of her own life, even so, let him cultivate a boundless heart towards all beings.

Mettañca sabbalokasmi,9
m?nasam bh?vaye aparim?nam;
Uddham adho ca tiriyañca,
asamb?dham averamasapattam.

Translation
Let one cultivate thoughts of boundless love for the whole world: above, below, and across without any obstruction, without any hatred, without any enmity.

Tittham caram nisinno va,10
say?no va y?vat?ssa vitamiddho.11
Etam satim adhittheyya,
brahmametam vih?ramidham?hu.

Translation
Whether he stands, walks, sits, or lies down, as long as he is awake, he should develop this mindfulness. This they say is the noblest living here.

Ditthiñca anupaggamma s?lav?
dassanena sampanno;
K?mesu vinaya12 gedham,
na hi j?tuggabbhaseyyam punaret??ti.

Translation
Not falling into wrong views, being virtuous and endowed with insight, by discarding attachment to sense desires, never again is he reborn in a womb

He certainly was a different type of fella.

Remember his post asking what you would do if you woke up to find your arse was in place of your face and visa versa? He wondered if you would stand on your hands to eat and how you would solve the problem of defecation.

Mix it in with his obsession regarding planetary constellations and a penchant for dodgy porn and you have quite a character.

(I actually think he just returned as "Moose".)

He was an IT guy at his company, I remember his descriptions of how he used to spend hours sifting (illegally) through everyone's emails, getting all the juicy details etc. I always supposed he'd been caught and chucked out..... :DL:

Nothing really to add to this, I just figured that seeing as I am the only one posting in Off Topic right now, I may as well see how many threads I can have with me as the last poster.
