Paul Merson speaks highly about Liverpool following strong start to the season

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has reserved praise for Liverpool following his strong start to the current league campaign. The Merseyside outfit ended a seven-year trophy drought last term as they won the Champions League while they missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City by the single point.

They have started the current season in fine fashion with the perfect tally of 18 points from the opening six league games and Merson has appreciated the Reds for coming up with the right attitude, he told: “I can’t speak highly enough of Liverpool (and) the way they’ve come back this season having done what they’ve done. It would have been easy to have won the Champions League and thought, ‘How are we gonna beat Man City?’, but they’ve all come back with the right attitude and gone ‘We’ll take them on again this year.’”

Liverpool were seven points ahead of the Citizens at one stage of the previous season but they still struggled to secure their maiden Premier League trophy. The Merseyside giants suffered just one league defeat during the course of the previous campaign but they paid the price through their tendency to play stalemates with the final of those coming against cross-town rivals Everton on the road.

Klopp’s side are currently on a 15-match winning streak in the Premier League and their bright start to the season sees them with a five-point advantage over the reigning champions. The Reds of course have to face the Citizens on a couple of occasions and those meetings could make or break their prospects of securing a maiden league title. The Reds were recently in action in the League Cup third round where they picked up a 2-0 win over MK Dons on the road. They are scheduled to host Arsenal during the fourth round of the competition next month.
