Jordan Henderson insists Liverpool must not lose confidence after Manchester City loss

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has urged the team to continue performing with the same level of intensity rather than worrying about the Premier League defeat at Manchester City. The Merseyside outfit had the opportunity to go nine points adrift of Tottenham Hotspur at the top of the table, but they were denied from doing so with the Citizens sealing a 2-1 win.

As such, they find themselves just four points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s team at the summit but Henderson insists that the club have to move on, he said:“There is no need to get carried away,” the captain insisted. It is normal to be disappointed by a defeat. Now it is about reaction and I am sure the lads will react in the right way. Why would you lose confidence after a game like that? It could have been different. We were beaten by a very good City team but there were still moments in the game where we could have scored one or two more. We just have to accept the defeat.”

The Reds have matched their expectations during the first half of the campaign where a strong defensive record has helped them maintain the top position. However, their real test should come during the backend of the campaign where the pressure will be on them to produce regular wins amid the competition from the Citizens and Spurs behind them.

Still, there does not appear any major weakness within the current Liverpool side but Klopp would undoubtedly want Joe Gomez to return at the earliest opportunity to replace Dejan Lovren at the heart of the defence. The England international sustained a foot problem during the early stages of December but he is expected to return to first-team action next month.Liverpool are scheduled to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in their next game in the FA Cup third round.
