Louis van Gaal claimed that his team were lucky to get a 1-0 win over Everton on Sunday.
Manchester United kept themselves in contention for a top four place by remaining within a point of fourth placed Manchester City as a result of this win. City had put a lot of pressure on United after getting a comfortable 4-0 away victory against Bournemouth on Saturday. Since United were playing a day later, there was a lot of onus on them to keep up with City. Even though United achieved this, Van Gaal says that the result could have been a lot different.
Anthony Martial scored the only goal of the game, as both teams failed to create many chances during the game. In fact, this goal scored by United was from their only shot on target. Everton also had a similarly poor performance on the attacking front despite starting with inform striker Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian international has been linked with United in recent weeks and he has scored 25 goals for the Merseyside club in all competitions. Van Gaal has been under pressure throughout the campaign, but he may sense an opportunity to sneak into the top four. Continue reading “Louis van Gaal feels Team to be Lucky over Everton Win”
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he was one of the first choices for Manchester United to replace Sir Alex Ferguson.
The former Borussia Dortmund manager has revealed that Ferguson took special interest in talking withKlopp about the possibility of taking over at United in 2013. SinceKlopp turned down the job quite quickly, United turned their attention towards other alternatives. In the end, David Moyes was appointed as the replacement for Ferguson and this move proved disastrous for all parties concerned. Moyes was sacked after less than 12 months in charge of the job.
Klopp was one of the sought-after manager in 2013 after having lead Borussia Dortmund to a Champions League final. Few would have imagined that such an achievement was possible in this day and age given the vast differences in finances between a club like Dortmund and the top guns like Barcelona and Real Madrid. However,Klopp build a team on shoestring budget and his teams also played attractive football. It is believed that these qualities were enough to convince Ferguson thatKlopp was right choice.Klopp, though, revealed that he had to turn down the offer because he was committed with Dortmund. Brendan Rodgers and the other decision makers at Liverpool need to be quite sensible in the coming pre season transfer window.
They must focus on covering the weaker bases.
At the moment, they are looking to be most interested in the Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne.
They had placed a bid of 10 million Pounds for the player earlier, but, it wasn’t accepted after which they are planning to increase the amount and go for another bid.
Clyne is a good player no doubt and it’s quite normal for the clubs to be interested in him for the kind of player he has turned out to be in the last one- one and half years.
But, the question is – is signing a right back the top priority for Liverpool at the moment?
The answer would be no despite the fact that a position is vacant there after the departure of Glen Johnson.
The first and foremost thing that the Reds have to do is to bring in a couple of high class strikers from somewhere because it’s that department which has let them down of late.
The no. of times Liverpool found the net in 2013-14 was fifty more than their goal’s tally the previous season which itself tells the story. Continue reading “Brendan Rodgers and the other decision makers at Liverpool need to be quite sensible”
Simon Mignolet has been a player transformed in the last few months. His future at Liverpool appeared to be in major doubt after being dropped to the bench after a string of disappointing performances towards the end of 2014.
This high-profile absence from the team lasted for a couple of weeks before the former Sunderland goalkeeper regained his first-team spot from Brad Jones. The Australian did extremely well in the absence of Mignolet, but he did concede three goals against United when the two teams met each other at Old Trafford. Come the reverse fixture at Anfield, Mignolet is expected to keep his place in the starting line-up.
He says that being dropped did a world of good to his form, as it helped him wake up. There was a hint of complacency from the Belgium in the early part of the season, but it appears to have all gone away. The club has conceded only one goal in the last four matches and it was against reigning league champions Manchester City. Liverpool have done great work in 2015 to remain in the hunt for a top four place, but Mignolet knows that the job will be complete only if the Reds keep on winning. A victory for United will put them five points clear of Liverpool. Continue reading “Simon Mignolet has been a player transformed in the last few months”
Brendan Rodgers has promised that Liverpool will be challenging for the title next season after failing to hit the heights of last season. Liverpool narrowly missed out on the league title for the first time in their history, as they finished only a couple of points behind Manchester City.
They were expected to build on this success, but the club are struggling to even finish in a top four place. This has largely been because of several restructuring in the squad after the exit of Luis Suarez. The club spent more than € 100 million on several new players, but most of them have failed to settle so far.
The club is showing signs of recovering with Rodgers using a different formation in the last few matches. Liverpool are unbeaten in all competitions since the 3-0 defeat against Manchester United in the middle of December. Raheem Sterling has been at the centre of this revival. Liverpool defender Glen Johnson’s future continues to be under the radar since he is out of contract at the end of this campaign, but he says that he is very much looking forward to facing Crystal Palace during the weekend. The Mersey side club will be returning to Selhurst Park to face the demons after losing a 3-0 advantage at this ground last season. This hurt the club immensely after they lost the title following this 3-3 draw. Liverpool do not seem to have recovered from this massive disappointment, as they have managed only four wins this season.
They come into the weekend match with a very poor run of form that has seen them suffer back-to-back defeats in three matches. It has been revealed that the club will be missing Daniel Sturridge for more number of weeks, as the England international has suffered yet another setback in his attempts to recover from the thigh strain he suffered in September.
Without Sturridge scoring the goals, Liverpool have struggled to win matches. Crystal Palace have the ability to put more misery on the visitors even though they are not in a good run of form themselves. Johnson says that even though this match looks easy on the paper, every match in the Premier League is difficult.
“It is a massive week. The first game back after the international break is always an important game because every team is obviously trying to go on a decent run of gaining points. We have got to take the weekend first and hopefully get three points and then we can hopefully go on a good run.
Crystal Palace have obviously had a break as well and will have been concentrating on this game since their last one. They need a few points, so it’s going to be an important game,” said Johnson.
